A nation rose to demand action after the death of a brave heart — sparking a revolution. The movement that started with Nirbhaya’s gangrape and death is now translating into action with the Cabinet finally giving a nod to an ordinance on stricter punishment for rape including death penalty in extreme cases.
Along with recommending death penalty — the ordinance also ensures that the minimum punishment is a 20 year jail term and that the term rape is replaced by ‘sexual assault’. While there is a debate on Government’s decision to not criminalise non consensual marital sex, the stricter punishment welcomed by India waiting for action.
