The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) is gearing up for its top leadership meet at Maha Kumbh and just ahead of the big conglomeration of various Hindu bodies across the country, senior VHP leader Ashok Singhal making a politically significant statement. Ashok Singhal, said, “For the first time people of the country are saying make him (Modi) the Prime Minister.” An unequivocal backing to Narendra Modi’s candidature, the senior VHP leader then putting the onus on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP.)
Ashok Singhal, said, “If this is what the people are saying then BJP must think about it. BJP leader has also said that the most popular leader in the party is Narendra Modi.” VHP leaders and various Hindu Akhada heads are expected to discuss on Modi’s candidature during its mega meet on February 6, and newly elected BJP President Rajnath Singh’s visit to Mahakumbh on the same day fuelling further speculation.

The BJP remaining tightlipped over the issue so far, Murli Manohar Joshi, senior BJP leader, said, “As soon as it is decided who it is going to be we will let you know. There won’t be any delay.” But their National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partner Janata Dal (United) continues to keep them on tenterhooks. Shivanand Tewari, said, “What kind of politics is this where a decision about the PM candidate is taken by a congregation of spiritual men. This is not acceptable.”

But another NDA ally, Akali Dal has once again made their stand clear. Sukhbir Singh Badal, said, “We will back the candidate that the BJP chooses.” As the BJP has so far kept the cards close to their chest, the Congress making a quip, Digvijaya Singh, senior Congress leader, said, “There are some people in the Vishwa Hindu Parishad who will say such things. But you must ask Pravin Togadia of the VHP if he will support Narendra Modi.” With the BJP continuing to play wait and watch over Modi, all eyes will now be on Rajnath Singh’s much-anticipated visit to Allahabad where he is expected to seek blessings from the top VHP leadership.
